PLAY TRIVIA DURING TONIGHT’S CONCERT, SPONSORED BY KMFA!

We invite you to play trivia sponsored by our incredible media partner, KMFA Classical 89.5. All are welcome to join using their smart phone or tablet. Here’s what you need to know and how to get connected:

  • WIFI is available. Feel free to use the network “Austin Public Library”

  • PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL OF THOSE AROUND YOU WHO ARE LISTENING TO THE CONCERT: Do not converse out loud or whisper with your “team” while music is being presented. Again, tonight’s trivia is just for fun—please do not ruin someone else’s experience. Those who are causing distractions during the concert will be asked to stand at the back of the room.

  • Read all instructions for game play and joining the game below BEFORE entering the trivia event, as navigating away from the trivia app will likely cause you some issues. (Click the plus signs below to read Trivia instructions!)

  • HAVE FUN!

    • CLICK HERE or follow the QR code on your paper program to join the trivia game.

    • Enter the event key 9B8W when prompted.

    • The game can be played from your browser OR from the TrivNow app. You do NOT have to download the app when prompted.

    • You will either need to “sign up,” which will allow you to create a team/player name, or play as a guest by clicking the GHOST icon in the top right corner (you will not be able to change your team name, and will be assigned a unique player number instead).

    • If you choose sign up rather than playing as a guest, please choose a team or player name that is family-friendly and appropriate. Those who do not adhere to this guideline will be banned from the game.

    • Once you have joined the event, questions will be pushed through directly to your device throughout the concert.

    • You will see the “KMFA TRIVIA NIGHT” graphic pop up on the overhead screens when a question is about to be released to your device, but the questions themselves will not be projected.

    • Questions are directly related to the songs that are being performed while they are asked. As such, you will have only one minute to answer each, and will NOT be able to navigate back to earlier questions, or submit answers after the timer runs out.

    • Some songs have multiple questions associated with them. In this case, questions will be asked back-to-back, and the overhead screens will tell you how many to expect!

    • Once you select an answer, you must push “Submit Answer” for your choice to count. (On some phones, you may need to scroll down to see the “submit answer” button.)

    • The correct answer will be shown on your device immediately after each question closes. In some cases, you will see a “learn more” button, which you can safely click without navigating out of the game.

    • The TrivNow website/app has safeguards that alert us when you take certain actions that could be indicative of “cheating,” such as closing your browser tab and opening a different one—you do not earn points if flagged as a “violation.” If you are planning to play trivia, we encourage you to join forces with a friend or partner to have tonight’s concert program open on ONE device, and keep trivia open on another. (In testing we’ve noticed that violations are sometimes flagged for no reason. Please do not stress if you see a violation pop up—this is just for fun!)

    • Because we have so many people playing, bonuses will be awarded for speed. This is automatically applied by the hosting website, and is only added to players who submit correct answers.

    • You will occasionally see the “leaderboard” on your device between questions. We will announce winners before the end of the concert.

    • Small prizes will be awarded at the end of the concert IF we have fewer than 2 winners. If we have more than a 2 way tie, we will invite the winners up for PUBLIC GLORY only. In other words, keep it light and fun, as you are mostly playing for bragging rights.

Soloists are listed in order of appearance.

O FORTUNA from “Carmina Burana”

BY CARL ORFF

  • Latin: O Fortuna
    English: O Fortune,
    Español: Ay Fortuna,

    velut luna
    like the moon
    como la Luna,

    statu variabilis,
    you are changeable,
    eres variable,

    semper crescis
    ever waxing
    siempre creciendo

    aut decrescis;
    and waning;
    y menguando;

    vita detestabilis
    hateful life
    vida detestable

    nunc obdurat
    first oppresses
    ahora oprimes,

    et tunc curat
    and then soothes
    después alivias

    ludo mentis aciem,
    as fancy takes it;
    a tu antojo

    egestatem,
    poverty
    la pobreza

    potestatem
    and power
    el poder

    dissolvit ut glaciem.

    you melt them like ice.
    los derrites como el hielo.

    Sors immanis

    Fate - monstrous
    Suerte cruel

    et inanis,

    and empty,
    y vacía,

    rota tu volubilis,
    you spinning wheel,
    ruleta que gira,

    status malus,
    malevolent,
    perversa,

    vana salus
    vain salvation
    salvación vana,

    semper dissolubilis,

    and always fades to nothing,
    siempre se esfuma,

    obumbrata
    shadowed
    oscura

    et velata
    and veiled
    y velada

    michi quoque niteris;
    you have me in your sight too;
    también me pone la vista;

    nunc per ludum
    now through the game
    ahora durante el juego,

    dorsum nudum
    I bring my bare back
    traigo la espalda desnuda

    fero tui sceleris.
    to your villainy.
    por tu villanía.

    Sors salutis
    Health
    La salud

    et virtutis
    and virtue
    y la fuerza

    michi nunc contraria,
    are turned against me,
las pone en contra de mí,

    est affectus
    driven on
    empujado

    et defectus
    and weighted down,
    y arrastrado,

    semper in angaria.
    always enslaved.
    siempre esclavizado.

    Hac in hora
    So at this hour
    En esta hora,

    sine mora
    without delay
    sin demora,

    corde pulsum tangite;

    pluck the vibrating strings;
    tocad las cuerdas vibrantes,

    quod per sortem
    since Fate
    ya que la suerte

    sternit fortem,
    may strike down the strong,
    puede derribar al fuerte,

    mecum omnes plangite!

    everyone weep with me!
    ¡lloren todos conmigo!

LET THE RIVER RUN

BY CARLY SIMON
ARR. CRAIG HELLA JOHNSON

  • English: Coming to the edge, running on the water,

Running, running, running, coming to the

    Corriendo, corriendo, corriendo, llegando

Come, come, come, come, running on the water, come

Let the river run, let all the dreamers wake the nation,

    Come, the new Jerusalem.
    Venga, la nueva Jerusalén.

Silver cities rise; the morning lights the streets that meet them,

Sirens call them on with a song.

Las sirenas las llaman con una canción.

It’s asking for the taking, trembling, shaking,
Piden que las tomen, temblando, estremeciéndose

    Oh, my heart is aching.
    ¡Oh, mi corazón anhelante!

We’re coming to the edge, running on the water,

Coming through the fog, your sons and daughters.
Atravesando la niebla, tus hijos e hijas.

Coming to the edge, come, come
Llegamos a la orilla, venga, venga

Dios de la Gloria, Señor del amor

Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee,

Hail Thee as the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,

Drive the dark of doubt away,
Ahuyenta la oscuridad de la duda

    Giver of immortal gladness,
    Dador del regocijo inmortal,

Fill us with the light of day.
Llénanos con la luz del día.

Come and join the chorus! The mighty, mighty chorus

TSHOTSHOLOZA

TRADITIONAL
ARR. JEFFREY AMES

Stephen Jones, soloist

  • Zulu/Ndebele: Tshotsholoza Ku lezontaba
English: Go forward from these mountains
Español: allá atrás de estas montañas

    Stimela siphum’e South Afrika
On this train from South Africa
    En este tren desde Sudáfrica

    Wen’ uyabaleka Ku lezontaba
You are running away from those mountains.
    Estás huyendo de esas montañas.

SKYFALL

ADELE ADKINS & PAUL EPWORTH
ARR. J.A.C. REDFORD

Sharon Robinson, soloist

  • English: This is the end . . . hold your breath and count to ten.

Feel the earth move and then hear my heart burst again,

For this is the end. I’ve drowned and dreamt this moment
Puesto que este es el fin. Me he ahogado y soñado este momento

    So overdue I owe them
    Tan tarde que les debo,

    Swept away I’m stolen.
    Arrastrada, estoy perdida.

Let the sky fall when it crumbles we will stand tall

And face it all together at sky fall.

Skyfall is where we start a thousand miles and poles apart

Where worlds collide and days are dark

You may have my number, you can take my name
Puedes tener mi número, y puedes quitarme el nombre

But you’ll never have my heart.
    Pero nunca tendrás mi corazón.

Where you go I go, what you see I see

I know I’d never be me without the security of your loving arms

    Keeping me from harm.
    Que me protegen del daño.

Put your hand in my hand and we’ll stand.

Let the sky fall, when it crumbles, we still stand tall

    And face it all together
    Y juntos lo enfrentaremos todo

THE SEAL LULLABY

BY ERIC WHITACRE
LYRICS FROM RUDYARD KIPLING’S “THE WHITE SEAL”

  • English: Oh! hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us,

And black are the waters that sparkled so green.

The moon, o’er the combers, looks downward to find us

At rest in the hollows that rustle between.

    Where billow meets billow, then soft be thy pillow;
    Donde una ola se encuentra con otra, tan suave será tu almohada;

Ah, weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease!
¡Ah, descansa cómodamente tus pequeñas y cansadas aletitas!

The storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee,

Asleep in the arms of the slow-swinging seas.

Holding Out for a Hero

BY JIM STEINMAN & DEAN PITCHFORD
ARR. PAUL LANGFORD

  • English: Where have all the good men gone, and where are all the gods?

Where’s the streetwise Hercules to fight the rising odds?

Isn’t there a white knight upon a fiery steed?

Late at night I toss and I turn and I dream of what I need.

I need a hero; I’m holding out for a hero ‘til the end of the night.

He’s gotta be strong, he’s gotta be fast,

And he’s gotta be fresh from the fight.
Y recién llegado de la pelea.

I need a hero; I’m holding out for a hero ‘til the mornin’ light.

He’s gotta be sure, and it’s gotta be soon,

And he’s gotta be larger than life.
Y tiene que ser de proporciones épicas.

Up where the mountains meet the heavens above

Out where the lightning splits the sea
Donde el relámpago divide el mar

I could swear there’s someone somewhere watchin’ me.

Through the wind and the chill and the rain

And the storm and the flood
Y la tormenta y la inundación

I can feel his approach like a fire in my blood.

    I need a hero . . .
    Necesito un héroe…

Bailando sobre brasas, he pasado mis noches

Now with me, you dance for today,

    Por nuestro día de movidas
    For our day of movements

    Los problemas los que sean
No matter what the problems may be

    ¡Salud! ¡Baila! ¡Baila!
    Cheers! Dance! Dance!

English: Taste it, yes taste it, this night is honey, taste it

    Taste it, keep it.
    Pruébalo, guárdalo.

    O dil’hai, dil’aakh’ri hadd’, hai rakh’le
Yes, keep this heart. Heart is the last limit.. Keep it
Sí, conserva este corazón. El corazón es el último límite. Mantenlo.

    Kaala, kaala kaajal tera
    This dark black eyeliner of yours;
    Tu delineador negro de ojos;

    Koi kaala jaadu haina?
    Is it your black magic?
    ¿Es tu magia negra?

    Shaabe ho,
    Have a good evening,
    Que tengas una buena tarde,

Thank you to SANS BAR FOR JOINING US TONIGHT!

North America’s first non-alcoholic bar is selling mock-tails and refreshments in the lobby! Their primary mission is to foster connections through meaningful experiences that don’t revolve around alcohol. In their words: “We are sober curious. We are sober sometimes. We are in recovery. We are allies of those who abstain for whatever reason… Above all, We are inclusive. We welcome all voices, all pathways, and all mental health conditions because shame or loneliness should never be the cause of death for anyone. Ever.” We love this inclusive small business model, and encourage you to support them with your purchases tonight!

Panoramic Voices Presents:
REQUIESCAT
Featuring Mozart’s Requiem
Friday, May 17, 7:00 pm
Austin Public Library Central

Our final concert of the season will focus on coping with grief and loss, and will feature Mozart's Requiem, performed with our friends at Central Texas Philharmonic at the downtown Austin Public Library on Saturday, May 17. We'll also be offering a sneak peek performance of our upcoming Here Be Monsters commission by local musician Sophie Mathieu, who was just recently named KMFA Classical 89.5's composer in residence for the coming season! Additionally, our friends at CommunityArts will be on site with an opportunity for singers and audience members to contribute to a public memorial mural in honor of lost loved ones. Join us for a moving and meaningful choral experience, closing out our 26th artistic season.
