A MESSAGE FROM PANO’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR:
Welcome to FOLK YEAH!
This project has been in the works since about 2 weeks after I signed my first contract with Panoramic Voices back in 2022. Invoke has taken the Austin classical scene by storm; it should come as no surprise that they were at the top of Panoramic’s collaborator wish list! If you haven’t heard them already, I suspect you’re about to see what I’m talking about…
From the beginning of our conversations around this project, the musicians of Invoke and I agreed that every step of the way should be as collaborative as possible. I think you will see the results of that incredible dynamic here tonight. We’ve assembled what we think is a truly special mix of folk music, much of which was arranged by both Invoke and Panoramic as a team! Invoke brought several pieces to the table from their repertoire, too: I’m particularly excited to share Sweet Willie, which they arranged around an old recording of one of their members’ great grandfathers—pulled from the Smithsonian’s folk archives—and to which we’ve had the privilege to add choral parts! I’m equally thrilled to present Invoke/Pano-arranged pop-folk classics, some of which—like Paul Simon’s “The Boxer”—my own mother taught me as a child.
(It’s worth mentioning that even our MERCH was a collaborative effort! We hope you’ll snag a FOLK YEAH tie dye, handmade for you by members of Invoke AND Panoramic.)
I’d be remiss not to mention that registration is open for our next project, IN THE ALCHEMIST’S GARDEN. In continuing our season of collaborations, this immersive choral experience will be presented at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center as part of their Luminations light installation in December! More information, including schedule, can be found on the registration form here.
I’d also like to encourage you to check out Invoke’s upcoming album, Evolve & Travel, which will be released next weekend through Sono Luminus! More information can be found on their website or here!
I hope you find something special about this evening. It’s been a deeply meaningful, endlessly satisfying couple of months for us at Panoramic, and I’m personally struggling to let this one go. But here we are; it’s concert day; and I’m just so happy you are here to see it!
THANK YOU FOR COMING.
-Juli
ABOUT INVOKE:
Described as “...not anything but everything: Classical, Folk, Bluegrass, Americana and a sound yet to be termed seamlessly merged into a perfect one” (David Srebnik, SiriusXM Classical Producer), Invoke (Nick Montopoli, violin/banjo/vocals; Zach Matteson, violin/vocals; Karl Mitze, viola/mandolin/vocals; Geoff Manyin, cello/vocals) strives to successfully dodge even the most valiant attempts at genre classification. The multi-instrumental quartet encompasses traditions from across America, including bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz, and minimalism. Fueled by their passion for storytelling, Invoke weaves all of these styles together to form a unique contemporary repertoire, featuring original works composed by and for the group.
Invoke was selected to be the Young Professional String Quartet in Residence at the University of Texas at Austin from 2016-2018. Since being selected as Interlochen’s Emerging Artists Quartet in 2014, the group has been a featured artist and on faculty at the Interlochen Adult Chamber Music Camp. The group also participated in the Emerging String Quartet Program at Stanford, and was selected as an Artist in Residence at Strathmore and the Fellowship String Quartet at Wintergreen Performing Arts. In 2018, Invoke was named a winner of the Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition in New York, NY, received First Prize at the M-Prize International Chamber Arts competition in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and received First Prize in the Coltman Competition in Austin, Texas.

Just a come-on
solo invitaciones
From the girls on seventh avenue
De las chicas de la séptima avenida
I do declare there were times
Confieso que hubo momentos
When I was so lonesome
Cuando me sentía tan solo
I took some comfort there
Que allí encontré algo de consuelo
—
Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
Luego estoy preparando mi ropa gruesa
And wishing I was gone, going home
Y deseando estar lejos y volver a casa
Where the New York City winters
Donde los inviernos de la ciudad de Nueva York
Aren’t bleeding me, leading me, going home
No me hagan sangrar, llevándome, voy a casa
—
In the clearing stands a boxer and a fighter by his trade
En el claro se encuentra un pugilista y un luchador por oficio
And he carries the reminder of every glove that laid him down
Y lleva el recordatorio de cada guante que lo derribó
And cut him till he cried out in his anger and his shame
y lo cortó hasta que gritó en su rabia y en su vergüenza.
I am leaving I am leaving but the fighter still remains
Me voy, me voy pero el luchador aún se queda.
THE END!
THANK YOU FOR coming to
